The Rice Owls will take their first steps in preparing for the 2014 season when they open spring workouts on Tuesday afternoon. It will be the Owls first chance to take the field together since the disappointing Liberty Bowl loss to Mississippi State.
Owl fans will see a lot of new faces with the start of spring workouts as the Owls have plenty of holes to fill with departing seniors.
Quarterback Driphus Jackson enters spring as the top quarterback and likely starter come week one, but redshirt freshman Nate German has really impressed the Owls coaching staff and could position himself for a bigger role after redshirting last season.
The Owls will also have to find a new workhorse at running back as the Owls lose both Charles Ross and Turner Petersen. They will also look to find depth at receiver behind Jordan Taylor and the emerging Devin Parks.
On the defensive side of the ball they will have to replace future NFL corner back Phillip Gaines, linebackers Michael Kutzler and Cameron Nwosu as well as graduating defensive ends Tanner Leland and Cody Bauer and 'Kat' Paul Porras.
With the opening of spring workouts the Owls will look to fill those holes and more with a deep and talented roster of players ready to step in and make a difference on both sides of the ball.
Who are the names to watch for the open positions?
Owls Insider examined the burning questions on both sides of the ball as the Owls prepare to open spring workouts.
