November 6, 2009 Though Offense is expected from a June Jones team, the SMU Mustang Defense is the unit that's playing better than most expected in 2009.The Mustangs are led by Defensive Coordinator Tom Mason, who came to SMU from the Fresno State staff, where he coached Linebackers for 7 years. His experience with that group is definitely showing in the Mustangs style of defense this year - 2 of the teams top 3 tacklers are Linebackers. Here's more on the rest of the Ponies... Inside the Numbers... Leading Tackler - Linebacker Chase Kennemer leads the Mustangs with 85 tackles. Interceptions - Safety Rock Dennis leads the Pony secondary with 4 interceptions. Sacks - Sophomore JC transfer Marquis Frazier leads SMU with 3.5 sacks. NCAA Ranking SMU ranks 84th nationally in total defense. C-USA Ranking The Ponies rank 5th in the conference in total defense. They also lead the league in pass efficiency defense. ~ Like SMU kicker Matt Szymanski, Linebacker Chase Kennemer is a transfer from Texas A&M. However Kennemer walked on at A&M. He leads the Ponies in tackles, but has also registered sacks, tackles for a loss, interceptions, and pass break-ups this year. ~ Several Mustang defenders were also recruited by the Owls, including DE Taylor Thompson, FS Chris Banjo, and Linebacker Patrick Fleming. ~ Unlike Rice, SMU has 3 junior college transfers starting on their Defense. The Owls have no junior college transfers on their roster. Owl Sports Watch is the premier site for Rice Owl athletics coverage. |
